On Sunday, June 15, 2025, former President John Dramani Mahama took a lighthearted but pointed swipe at ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the controversial and incomplete National Cathedral project.

Speaking during a Father’s Day service at the Ringway Assemblies of God Church, President Mahama ended his sermon with a remark that triggered laughter across the congregation. In praying for the church’s continued growth, Mahama humorously referenced the uncompleted cathedral project:

“May our church not be the National Cathedral hole... You didn't see that one coming,” he quipped.

He added with a chuckle, “Let it grow and grow and grow,” sparking applause and laughter.

The comment appeared to be a thinly veiled criticism of the National Cathedral, a flagship project initiated by the Akufo-Addo administration. Initially billed as a monumental structure meant to honor Ghana’s Christian heritage and boost tourism, the project has stalled for years, with only a massive excavation pit — now dubbed the “cathedral hole” — standing in its place.

Despite over $58 million in funding reportedly disbursed, construction has been riddled with delays, funding controversies, and transparency issues. The issue has not only stirred public discontent but has also attracted international attention, having been featured in The New York Times.

Critics argue the money could have been better spent on urgent national needs, while supporters say the cathedral was a spiritual and cultural priority.

Mahama’s remark comes at a time when calls for accountability and project audits are growing louder, and it signals his intent to keep the issue in public discourse as Ghana heads toward the 2026 general elections.
